Ooh, this is a good question…

1. Sam Gamgee – The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien. Sam’s so lovely. And criminally underrated. He’s kind, loyal, generous, unselfish and quick to laugh. Frodo would not have got anywhere without Sam.
2. Arthur Dent – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams. Arthur would just be so hilarious to have around. I love how British he is, really. And tea-obsessed. Because tea.
   
3. Luisa Rey – Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell. Journalistic integrity FTW!
4. Lizzie Hexam – Our Mutual Friend, Charles Dickens. A Victorian heroine who Gets Things Done. She’s like Jane Eyre but less irritatingly Christian.
   
5. Susan Sto Helit – Hogfather, Terry Pratchett. She Walks the Walk. She Talks the Talk. She’s cynical, she can freeze time, she’s quick-thinking and she fights evil geniuses. Could you have a better best friend?
6. Blue Van Meer – Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Marisha Pessl. Blue is a reader who goes on a literary murder mystery hunt. I just think we’d get on well.
7. Hermione Granger – Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling. “It’s ‘leviosa’, not ‘leviosa‘.” This sounds more like something I would say than I care to admit. Also, “When in doubt, go to the library.” #truth
8. Lirael – Lirael, Garth Nix. She becomes a LIBRARIAN, guys. In a MAGICAL LIBRARY. And then goes on ADVENTURES.
9. William de Worde – The Truth, Terry Pratchett. A slightly awkward young ex-aristocrat who starts a newspaper. Maybe he could give me some tips.
   
10. Foamfollower Saltheart – The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, Stephen Donaldson. Sure, he’s a bit tall, but really he’s a sweetheart, always laughing and telling stories. You’d never be sad with him around. “Joy is in the ears that hear.”
