- Sam Gamgee – The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien. Sam is adorable and loyal and kind and he’d stick up for his family. He’d be a great cousin or brother or something.
- Arthur Dent – The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams. He’s one of those characters who just needs looking after. Plus family gatherings would be utterly hilarious with him around.
- Bella Wilfer – Our Mutual Friend, Charles Dickens. She’d be great to have girly chats with about dresses and makeup and stuff.
- Susan Sto Helit – Hogfather, Terry Pratchett. Susan would not take any nonsense, from anyone. Also she can stop time and do THE VOICE and kill bogeymen and who wouldn’t want that in a sister? (I’d also quite like to have Death as a grandfather. He’s just so sweet.)
- Blue Van Meer – Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Marisha Pessl. Because we could witter pretentiously about books together.
- Beatrice – Much Ado About Nothing, William Shakespeare. When her cousin gets hurt she stops at nothing to make it right.
- Anne Eliot – Persuasion, Jane Austen. She needs a friend so desperately, and she’s a really sweet person.
- Mma Ramotswe – The Number One Ladies’ Detective Agency, Alexander McCall Smith. She just sweeps everyone up and makes everyone happy and safe and warm. And tea.
- Sabriel – Sabriel, Garth Nix. Capable and clever, brave and resourceful, and hopefully I could get her to teach me magic. She’d always know what to do in a crisis, and how to deal with argumentative family members.
- Rupert Psmith – Leave it to Psmith, P.G. Wodehouse. But a fairly distant relative, so you could send him away when his facetiousness got boring.
