“There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made.”
J.R.R. Tolkien
For any of you unfamiliar with my particular insanity, every year I re-read The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in one big chunk. It usually takes 2-3 months depending on how much reading time I have at that point in the year. For the last couple of years I’ve done it during the summer months so as not to interfere with my university work, but now I’m back in the Real World I’ve decided to move it back to autumn – Tolkien’s a very autumnal writer, full of fading and falling and grey misty mornings.
So I won’t be posting book reviews for a month or two, though I may do a summing-up post at the end of the Marathon. Normal service continues for TV, though.
You can see my progress (if you so wish) in my Tolkien Reading Marathon widget – click on the menu button at the top-right of the page.
