- Fifty Shades of Grey – E.L. James. I hasten to add that this is not actually on my list, but it’s a perennial topic for discussion when people talk about books, which both astounds and worries me.
- Crown of Midnight – Sarah J. Maas. I disliked Throne of Glass, but the entire internet tells me that the series gets “so much better!” Sorry, but if you can’t grab me with your first book you aren’t getting any more of my money.
- Ancillary Justice – Ann Leckie. OK, I do actually want to read this one, because it sounds absolutely fantastic. So if anyone is thinking about Christmas presents…
- The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald. “So, you know in The Great Gatsby?” “Er…no?”
- Go Set a Watchman – Harper Lee. Everyone was going wild about this earlier in the year, but I’ve never liked To Kill a Mockingbird that much, and from all the reviews it seems that Watchman is basically just a worse version of Mockingbird. So, very little interest.
- The History of Middle-earth – J.R.R. Tolkien. OK, here I mean “everyone” in a very specialised sense, i.e. “all my Tolkien friends”. This may make me a Bad Tolkien Fan, but I just don’t care that much about The History of Middle-earth, given that it is essentially The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings except worse. So very much like Go Set a Watchman, then.
- Lord of the Flies – William Golding. “So, you know in Lord of the Flies?” “Er…no. Should I?”
- Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card. I know everyone has read this, because everyone complains about how homophobic Card is and how they never liked Ender’s Game anyway. I’m sure at least some of these people must be lying.
- The Shining – Stephen King. “So, you know in The Shining?” “SHUT UP.”
- Dune – Frank Herbert. This one is lurking at the back of my mind as a “nice-to-read”, so maybe one day.
